stadiummk to host England Under-21s

26 September 2013

stadiummk will play host to England Under-21s as they entertain Finland Under-21s in their UEFA European U21 Championship qualifier in mid-November.

The home of MK Dons will become the home of the Young Lions for one night as Gareth Southgate’s side continue their qualifying campaign for Czech Republic 2015. The match will take place on Thursday 14th November, kick-off 7.45pm.

It will be the third time the Young Lions have played at stadiummk; on their first visit back in September 2007 England Under-21s beat Bulgaria 2-0 in front of 20,222 supporters with Theo Walcott, James Milner and Joe Hart all involved. They returned in  June 2009 when they brushed aside Azerbaijan 7- 0. On that night Joe Hart, Fabrice Muamba, Jack Rodwell, Mark Noble, Danny Rose and Fraizer Campbell were all in action.

Southgate’s team host Finland and so will be looking to take full advantage of home support in Milton Keynes before travelling to Shrewsbury Town’s Greenhous Meadow to play San Marino five days later.

First up will be current Group One leaders Finland, who held the Three Lions to a 1-1 draw in Tampere earlier this month, who they meet at stadiummk on Thursday 14 November.

The two qualifiers bring a busy three months to an end for Southgate and his team, who began their new qualifying campaign in September with a win against Moldova in Reading and then the draw with Finland.

October sees two more qualifiers with the trip to San Marino and then a game with Lithuania at Ipswich Town’s Portman Road before the final two matches of 2013 take place.

Speaking about the games, Under-21s Head Coach Southgate said: “It’s always good to be back on home soil for our qualifiers and hopefully we can get the results we want from these matches.

“It’s a busy start to the qualifying campaign for us, but we want to try and be in control of the group going into next year. One thing that we noticed in our last game in Finland was that the surface was quite thick and it will be similar in most of the other nations we face away.

“We’re spoilt with the pitches that we get to play on here in England so we’ll be looking forward to these games.”

Both games will be shown live on BT.
